At the funeral of a young woman, four strong men struggled to lift her coffin, and then nearly dropped it because of its strange weight. When her grief-stricken husband demanded that the coffin be opened immediately, what was inside horrified everyone present.
At the old city cemetery, people had been gathering since early morning. The sky was overcast with grey clouds, dampness hung in the air, and between the rows of headstones, relatives and friends of a young woman named Emilia moved slowly.

She was only twenty-nine years old. A few days earlier, she had died in a car accident on her way home. Doctors fought for her life for several hours, but her injuries proved too severe.
Next to the closed coffin stood Emilia’s parents. Nearby was her husband, Daniel. He barely spoke to anyone and kept his eyes fixed on the coffin. The ceremony lasted about an hour.
When the farewell came to an end, the priest spoke the final words of the prayer, and then it was time to lower the coffin into the grave.
Four funeral home workers approached and took hold of the handles. One of the men gave a short nod to the others.
“Lift.”
They tensed simultaneously and tried to raise the coffin. But within seconds, surprise appeared on their faces. The coffin rose only a few centimeters.
The men exchanged glances.
“What’s going on?”
“I don’t know.”
They tried again. This time, the coffin rose to about knee height. The muscles in the workers’ arms strained so hard they were visible even through their jacket sleeves.
“It’s too heavy.”
“It can’t be.”
“Careful…”
A few seconds later, they had to set it back down on the ground. A quiet murmur arose from the crowd. People began exchanging puzzled looks.
One of the workers wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“How much did the deceased weigh?”
“About sixty kilograms,” someone from the family answered.
The man frowned.
“Then I don’t understand anything at all.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What do you mean, you don’t understand?”
“The coffin is too heavy.”
“Too heavy for what?”
“For a woman of that weight.”
The deceased woman’s husband began to grow visibly agitated.
“Don’t you have any strength at all? My wife weighed only sixty kilograms.”
“That’s not the issue, sir.”
“Then what is?”

The worker didn’t answer. He himself looked bewildered. A minute later, the men decided to try once more. This time, they gathered their strength, took a more secure stance, and lifted the coffin together.
With great effort, they managed to hold it off the ground. The faces of all four were reddened from strain. They slowly took a few steps toward the grave. Only a few meters remained.
But suddenly, one of the men stumbled. The coffin tilted sharply. The others tried to hold it, but the weight proved too great. A loud crash rang out. The coffin slammed heavily to the ground.
A gasp of fear swept through the cemetery. One of the workers breathed heavily and stared at the coffin as if seeing it for the first time.
“This is impossible…”
“What’s impossible?”
“It weighs far more than it should.”
After these words, Daniel suddenly fell silent. For a few seconds, he stared at the coffin with a fixed gaze. Then his face changed abruptly. He stepped forward sharply.
“Open the coffin right now.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
“Open it immediately!”
“Sir, that’s prohibited…”
“Open it now!”
The workers carefully removed the fastenings. The lid began to be slowly lifted. Complete silence fell around them.
When the lid was fully opened, several people recoiled immediately, because inside the coffin was… (Continued in the first comment.)
One of the workers turned pale. Another covered his mouth with his hand. Beneath Emilia’s body was a hidden compartment. It had been made so carefully that it was practically impossible to notice from the outside.
Inside lay a man. The body was tightly wrapped in black plastic. A sharp chemical smell immediately emanated from it.
For a few seconds, no one could utter a word. The first to speak was one of the funeral service workers.
“My God…” His voice trembled. “There’s another body.”
A frightened murmur rippled through the crowd. People began to back away from the coffin. Someone started crying. Someone pulled out a phone. One of the relatives whispered:
“How is this even possible?”
The funeral home workers looked no less shocked.
“We received the coffin already closed.”
“Everything was sealed.”
“The documents were in order.”
“We didn’t know anything.”
Daniel slowly sank to his knees beside the coffin. He looked from his wife’s body to the terrible find beneath her. His face turned pale.
“Who could have done this?”
No one knew the answer.
Within a few minutes, police arrived at the cemetery. The area was immediately cordoned off. The funeral was halted. Investigators began examining documents, interrogating funeral company employees, and checking the coffin’s delivery route.
And a few days later, something even more shocking came to light.
The unknown man turned out to be a former accountant at a large construction firm. A few days earlier, he had vanished without a trace. According to the investigation, he had been planning to hand over documents to prosecutors about large-scale financial fraud within the company. After that, no one had seen him again.

The investigation quickly revealed that the coffin delivery had been arranged through a shell company registered with forged documents.
Investigators concluded that the criminals had taken advantage of the Emilia family’s tragedy. While the relatives were busy organizing the funeral and grieving their loss, someone decided to use her funeral to conceal the body of a man who could have become a key witness in a high-profile case.
The criminals were confident that no one would ever check the contents of a closed coffin before burial. They had counted on the grave hiding all traces forever.
