On the bus, one woman decided she could do whatever she wanted and put her dirty foot right on my armrest. I asked her several times to take her foot off, but she just pretended to be asleep. So I had to teach her a lesson she would never forget.

That day had been especially tough.

I finished my shift later than usual and felt like I hadn’t slept for several days straight. All I wanted was to ride home peacefully, lean back in my seat, and not think about anything for at least half an hour.

The bus was almost full.

People were returning from work — some scrolling through their phones, some dozing off, some just silently staring out the window. I sat by the aisle and held my bag of groceries tightly against me.

The first few minutes were calm. But then I felt something touch my elbow.

I looked to the side and saw a woman’s foot.

At first, I didn’t even understand what was happening.

The woman sitting behind me had stretched her leg forward and placed it right on my armrest. She was barefoot, and her sole looked like it had been walking through dusty streets all day.

I carefully turned around.

The woman sat with her eyes closed, pretending to be fast asleep.

I thought that maybe she had stretched her leg out accidentally in her sleep.

So I calmly said:

“Excuse me, your foot is on my armrest.”

There was no reaction. I repeated it louder. The woman slightly opened one eye, looked at me, and closed it again.

She didn’t even move her foot. The smell was becoming more noticeable. People nearby began to frown and exchange glances. It was becoming increasingly unpleasant for me to sit there.

A couple of minutes later, I turned around again.

“Please take your foot off.”

This time, the woman heaved a heavy sigh, as if I were the one disturbing her rest.

“I’m tired,” she muttered irritably. “You can endure it.”

After that, she closed her eyes again. I didn’t want to cause a scene. The whole day had been too exhausting for arguments.

So I just sat in silence for a few more minutes.

But the woman had clearly decided that if no one was stopping her, she could keep going.

After a while, she not only didn’t remove her foot but also made herself more comfortable, completely taking over my armrest.

I looked around. Several passengers were already watching the scene. Some shook their heads. Some chuckled quietly.

It was obvious that people perfectly understood who was in the wrong here. Then an idea came to me. Simple, but very effective — a lesson she definitely wouldn’t forget. (You can find the continuation of this story in the first comment.)

I took a bottle of cold water out of my bag, the one I’d bought after work.

I opened it and took a few sips.

Then I carefully raised the bottle and pretended that the bus had suddenly lurched on a turn.

A few drops of cold water accidentally fell right onto her foot.

The woman literally jumped.

She snapped her eyes open and yanked her leg back in fright.

“What are you doing?!” she shouted indignantly.

I looked at her calmly.

“Sorry, the bus lurched.”

She was about to say something, but at that moment, a passenger across from me unexpectedly said:

“Well, at least your foot is finally off someone else’s space.”

Right after that, someone behind me laughed.

Then another person.

Within seconds, half of the nearby passengers were looking at the woman with clear disapproval.

An elderly man by the window shook his head and added:

“The young man asked you politely three times to move your foot.”

The woman looked around and realized that no one was on her side.

She quickly put her shoes on, turned toward the window, and didn’t say another word.

For the rest of the ride, her feet stayed where they were supposed to be.

And I was finally able to relax and gaze out the window in peace.

Sometimes people don’t understand simple requests.

But once they find themselves in the center of attention of an entire bus, good manners suddenly come back on their own.
