A cruel king ordered a girl to be fed to the lions for refusing to become his wife — however, just a few minutes later, the guards panicked and rushed to open the gates of the pit.
That day, so many people gathered in the main square of the kingdom that there was almost no free space left.
Some came out of curiosity to watch the execution, others because they were afraid to disobey the king’s order, and still others hoped to witness another spectacle—the kind the ruler loved to entertain his subjects with.

The king himself sat on a high throne set directly above the square.
He was a man feared by all. He had ruled for many years and had long grown used to getting everything he wanted.
If anyone argued with him, they were thrown into prison. If someone dared to oppose him, the punishment became even more severe.
Several months earlier, the king had noticed a young girl named Emilia.
She lived in a small village on the outskirts of the kingdom and was the daughter of a simple blacksmith.
She did not belong to a noble family, had no wealth, and had never dreamed of palace life.
But her beauty quickly became known throughout the land.
One day, the rumors reached the king himself. He ordered that the girl be brought to the palace.
When Emilia stood before the throne, the ruler immediately declared:
“You will become my wife.”
Silence fell over the hall.
Everyone expected the girl to fall to her knees with joy. But something entirely different happened.
Emilia calmly looked at the king and replied:
“I do not love you, and I will not become your wife.”
The courtiers turned pale. Some even lowered their heads, afraid to see the ruler’s reaction. The king remained silent for a few seconds, then slowly rose from his throne.

“Do you understand whom you are refusing?”
“Yes.”
“And you still say no?”
“Yes.”
After that, the king ordered the girl to be thrown into the dungeon. For several days, he hoped she would change her mind. But each time he received the same answer. Then his patience ran out.
He decided to stage a public execution. Beneath the square was a deep stone pit where lions were kept to punish criminals.
Almost no one was ever thrown there, because the mere sight of the beasts was enough to terrify anyone.
When the guards led Emilia onto the square, the crowd parted. The girl was pale but composed.
She did not cry or beg for mercy.
The king rose from his seat and loudly declared:
“Let everyone see what happens to those who dare to defy me.”
The guards led the girl to the edge of the pit. From below came a menacing roar.
Four massive lions paced across the stone floor. The crowd froze. Some turned away. Others closed their eyes.
Then the girl was pushed down. The people gasped. The king smiled with satisfaction and leaned forward, expecting to witness the execution.
The lions immediately noticed the human. One of the beasts slowly approached the girl. The others followed. The growling grew louder. Emilia stood motionless.
She understood there was nowhere to run. A huge lion came very close.
The square was so silent that only the breathing of the beasts could be heard.
And suddenly, something strange happened—after which the guards rushed in panic to open the gates of the pit.
The lion stopped. Then slowly lowered its head. A moment later, it lay down at the girl’s feet.
The second lion did the same. Then the third and the fourth followed.
The crowd could not believe their eyes. People began looking at one another in confusion.
The king jumped to his feet.
“What is happening?!”
But no one could answer. A few seconds later, something even more astonishing occurred. One of the lions stood up, approached the girl, and gently rubbed its head against her hand like a domestic cat.
A frightened whisper spread across the square.
The king turned pale with anger.
“Open the cages! Release the other lions!”
The guards obeyed.
Several more adult males ran out from the neighboring gates.
Now there were eight of them.
Everyone expected the situation to change.
But the new lions also approached the girl and calmly lay down beside her, as if guarding her.
The king began shouting at the guards, demanding an explanation.
At that moment, the old keeper of the menagerie, who had cared for the lions for many years, suddenly stepped forward.
He looked at the girl for a long time, then said:
“Your Majesty… I remember her.”
“What do you mean, remember?”
“Twenty years ago, during a terrible storm, a lioness refused to feed her newborn cub. A young woman came every day and nursed it. She saved its life.”
The keeper pointed down.
“That is the very lion. He is now the leader of the pride.”
The king waved his hand irritably.
“What does that have to do with this?”
The old man sighed heavily.
“Because that woman was this girl’s mother.”
Silence fell over the square once again.
The keeper continued:
“After her mother’s death, Emilia helped me care for the animals for many years. She fed them, treated them, and saved injured ones. The lions have known her since childhood.”
Now everything became clear.
The animals did not see a victim before them. They saw a person who had cared for them all her life.
The crowd began loudly discussing what they had heard.

People started demanding that the girl be freed. The guards were no longer eager to carry out the king’s orders.
Some of them even went down into the pit and opened the gates.
When Emilia came out, thousands of people greeted her with applause.
And that day, for the first time, the king realized that he had lost the most important thing — the fear of his subjects.
