A few days later, she came to the luxurious ward for the first time. It didn’t look like an ordinary hospital room at all. Inside, there was expensive furniture, modern equipment was operating, and a guard stood on duty by the door around the clock. The patient himself lay motionless on the bed. The doctors said there was almost no chance of waking up, so many had long since come to treat him as a person who simply existed thanks to machines.
The first weeks passed quite calmly. The girl changed the IVs on time, took blood pressure measurements, turned the patient to prevent bedsores, monitored his condition, and performed all the necessary procedures every day. She even started talking to him, although she fully understood that she would never hear a reply. She felt that this way the person wouldn’t be so lonely, even if he understood nothing.
Almost a month passed.
One morning, it was time for another hygienic procedure. The girl began to change the patient’s diaper, as she had done dozens of times before. It seemed to her that the fingers of his right hand had twitched ever so slightly. She froze.
For a few seconds, the nurse simply stared at the hand, deciding she must have imagined it. But then the movement happened again. It was so faint that anyone else probably wouldn’t have even noticed.
The girl quickly finished the procedure and immediately called for the doctor on duty.
He looked at the patient for just a few seconds and calmly replied:
“It’s a regular reflex. That happens sometimes.”
But the nurse disagreed. In the month she had worked there, she had studied the man’s condition thoroughly and understood that nothing like this had happened before. Moreover, when she quietly said his name again, his finger trembled slightly once more.
Now she was certain—it wasn’t a coincidence.
Despite her colleagues’ mockery, the girl carefully observed the patient for several days in a row. She noticed one strange peculiarity. Every time she spoke to him or took his hand, the heart rhythm on the monitor changed slightly, and his fingers would sometimes move again, just barely.
She insisted that the man be examined once more.
At first, the clinic’s management refused. All previous examinations had long since shown that the condition was hopeless, and no one wanted to pay for expensive procedures. But the nurse didn’t give up. She convinced the head physician to at least invite a renowned neurosurgeon from another clinic.
The specialist arrived a few days later and ordered an examination that had never been performed on the patient before.
The results shocked everyone.
It turned out that the cause of the coma was severe compression of a certain part of the brain due to a rare complication from an old surgery. Modern neurosurgery could already fix such a problem, but for two years, no one had even thought to check that version, because everyone was certain that there was no hope left.
The surgery was performed within a few days. It lasted almost eight hours.
The first signs of improvement appeared only after two weeks. The millionaire opened his eyes on his own for the first time, and a few days later, he was able to weakly squeeze the very same nurse’s hand.
When the man fully regained consciousness and learned who had insisted on the re-examination, he was silent for a long time, and then quietly said:
“Everyone had already stopped fighting for me… Except for you.”
