A seven-year-old girl was walking home after school when she suddenly noticed that a strange man was following her. Instead of running or screaming, she did something unexpected.
Seven-year-old Sofia was walking home from school along a familiar street she had walked hundreds of times before. A backpack hung from her shoulders, childish thoughts swirled in her mind, and everything around her seemed as usual: quiet houses, trees along the road, the smell of fresh pastries from a nearby bakery, and only a few passersby. The day felt completely ordinary, and nothing hinted at trouble.

But at some point, Sofia felt a strange тревогу—like someone behind her was staring straight at her back. At first, she didn’t pay much attention and thought she was just imagining things. However, the uneasy feeling didn’t go away. The girl began to walk a little faster and cautiously glanced back.
At the end of the street, there really was a tall man walking behind her. He was dressed in black, wearing a dark hat that almost hid his face, which made him seem even more frightening.
Sofia turned away and quickened her pace again. Her heart was pounding so loudly that it felt as if the whole street could hear it. She no longer doubted that the man was following her.
His heavy footsteps sounded closer and closer, and with every second the distance between them grew smaller. Only one block remained before her house, but suddenly she became so scared that her legs felt like they were made of lead.
She looked back again and met his gaze. His eyes seemed cold and empty, and his face beneath the brim of the hat looked чужим and frightening. The street was too quiet at that moment, and the silence only made the fear stronger.
Any other child in her place would probably have started running or screaming, but Sofia, unexpectedly even for herself, did something entirely different.
She suddenly stopped in the middle of the road, slowly turned to face the stranger, and looked straight at him. And then the girl did something that, at that moment, saved her life. The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment.
Instead of running toward her house and losing precious seconds, Sofia suddenly turned into a neighboring yard and quickly knocked on the door of a house where an elderly couple lived.
Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would burst out of her chest, but she tried with all her might not to show panic.
A moment later, an elderly woman opened the door, looked at the girl in surprise, and then Sofia suddenly said loudly, almost deliberately:
“Grandma, I’m home! Has Dad come back from work yet? He promised to help me write my essay ‘My Dad is a Police Officer.’”
And then, before the woman could fully understand what was happening, Sofia leaned slightly toward her and whispered barely audibly:
“Please help me, someone is following me.”

The neighbor’s face changed instantly. She didn’t ask unnecessary questions, didn’t panic, and immediately understood everything. The woman firmly took Sofia by the hand, quickly led her into the house, and from the doorway said loudly, so it could be heard outside:
“Of course, dear, your dad has been home for a while. Come in quickly, he’s waiting for you.”
After that, she immediately called her husband. The elderly man came into the hallway and then slowly stepped onto the porch, carefully looking toward the street.
The stranger who had been following Sofia noticed that the girl was no longer alone, that she had been let into the house, and that adults were nearby. He stopped, stood there for a few seconds, then suddenly turned around and walked away quickly without even looking back.
Only after the door closed did Sofia finally break down in tears. Her hands were shaking, her voice trembling, and there was such terror in her eyes that the elderly couple immediately understood: just a little more, and everything could have ended very differently.

That evening, a neighbor walked the girl home, and her mother, upon learning everything, couldn’t calm down for a long time.
Later, everyone said the same thing: Sofia was saved not by a miracle, but by her quick thinking—because in that terrifying moment, a little girl managed to act more wisely than many adults.
