Pregnant Alina, holding her huge belly with both hands, struggled to get up from the wet ground and took a few uncertain steps toward the car. Her face was pale, tears streamed down her cheeks, and her voice trembled so much that her words were barely audible.

She reached out her hand to him, but he slammed the car door shut. A second later, the engine roared loudly, the wheels splashed mud on her, and the car slowly drove away.
Alina ran after it for a few more seconds, as far as her strength allowed.

But the red taillights grew smaller and smaller until they finally disappeared around a bend in the forest road.
She was left alone.
The silence around her was so profound that she could hear the wind swaying the tops of the pines. Somewhere in the distance, a bird cried out, and then the frightening silence returned.
The woman slowly sank down by a fallen tree and covered her face with her hands. She finally understood the terrible truth.
In recent months, her husband had constantly asked about documents, showed interest in her accounts, urged her to sign a power of attorney and transfer part of her inheritance to a joint account. After her parents died, Alina had received a large sum of money and a big house, and now everything fell into one horrifying picture.
He had no intention of saving her.
He had deliberately brought her to this remote place, hoping that no one would ever know what had happened there.
If she died, the child would not be born either, and he would be the only person who could claim part of her property.
At that thought, her blood ran cold.

He was much larger than any wolf she had ever seen in photographs. His thick coat seemed almost black, and his amber eyes never left the woman.
Alina stopped breathing.
She knew she shouldn’t make any sudden movements, but her body began to tremble on its own.
— Don’t come any closer… Please… — she whispered, barely audible.
The wolf took another step. Then another. The distance between them was shrinking.
The woman wrapped her arms around her belly, as if she could protect her child with her own body.

He raised his head, looked intently behind her, and suddenly let out a loud, long growl.
Alina had never heard such a roar.
A few seconds later, a heavy crackling of branches came from the thicket. She slowly turned her head. Out of the darkness came a huge brown bear. The predator was walking straight toward her.
Now the woman understood why the wolf hadn’t attacked. He wasn’t looking at her at all.
He was looking at the bear.
The next moment, the wolf lunged forward.
The forest literally exploded with roaring, growling, and the crack of breaking branches. Alina pressed herself to the ground, covering her head with her hands.
She didn’t see the fight itself; she only heard heavy thuds, terrifying growls, and felt the earth shaking.
It all stopped as suddenly as it had begun.
Almost a minute passed.
Then, out of the darkness, the same wolf slowly emerged.
His fur was stained with blood, but he confidently walked up to the woman and unexpectedly sat down beside her.
He didn’t growl. He didn’t bare his teeth. He just looked at her.
Then he turned his head toward the forest road and took a few steps, as if inviting her to follow him.
Alina hesitated for a long time, but she had no other choice.
She got up and slowly walked after him.
The wolf always stayed ahead, sometimes stopping and waiting for her to catch up.
This continued for almost an hour. And suddenly, lights appeared ahead.
A small forest ranger station.
When the woman reached the people, the wolf stopped at the edge of the forest. The ranger rushed to Alina, helped her sit down, and immediately called an ambulance.
When the man turned around to show where the animal was, there was no one at the edge of the clearing.
A few days later, the police arrested the husband.
It turned out that the gas station cameras had recorded him studying the route to the deserted forest in advance, and in his phone they found messages with his mistress, in which he wrote just one phrase:
«After this trip, all the money will finally be mine.»
The court sentenced him to many years in prison.
Alina gave birth safely to a healthy boy.
