A colonel, in −40°C weather, pushed a female soldier off a ship into the icy ocean, trying to get rid of a problematic subordinate, but he could never have imagined how that action would end.
The colonel stood on the deck, his hands clasped behind his back, calmly watching the raging ocean. The wind cut into his face, the frost reached minus forty degrees, and the icy water below looked like a deadly trap for anyone who fell into it. When the woman’s body disappeared among the waves, he even allowed himself a slight, almost imperceptible smile. At that moment, it seemed to him that the problem was solved forever.

He had waited a long time for this day. From the very first moment she appeared on the ship, everything had gone wrong. A newcomer, but too confident, too principled. On her very first day, she noticed things others preferred to ignore and reported his actions up the chain of command. It nearly cost him his career. He did nothing then, but he never forgot the insult. He simply waited for the right moment.
And now that moment had come.
The ship had gone far out into open sea. Communication with the shore was weak, almost nonexistent. The deck was empty, the frost froze every movement, and all around there was only ice and endless water. She stood by the railing, unaware that a decision had already been made behind her back. In that instant, he understood: there would be no second chance.
He approached quietly, almost silently. A sudden movement — and it all happened in a second.
— You wanted justice? Here it is.
Her scream dissolved into the wind, and her body disappeared into the icy water.
Several people saw it. They stood nearby, exchanging glances, but no one intervened. Fear of the colonel was stronger. Everyone pretended nothing had happened.
The colonel was certain it had all ended exactly as he intended.
But he was wrong. He could not even imagine what consequences this act would bring.
Cold did not kill her. Pain did not break her. With great effort, through the freezing water, clinging to metal and protrusions, the woman managed to get out. Her hands were torn, her breathing uneven, but she did not stop. While everyone on the ship believed she was gone, she came back.

And first of all, she reached the radio.
Her voice was weak, but there was no fear in it — only clear words and facts. She reported everything.
The next day, when the ship approached the station, people were already waiting on the pier. Not just greeters — uniformed officers, police, special services. The atmosphere onboard changed instantly. The tension became unbearable.
The colonel did not understand at first. He stepped onto the deck as confidently as always, but within seconds he saw their faces. And then he understood everything.
She was brought forward. Alive.
Her hands were bandaged, she was pale, but she stood straight. She looked at him calmly, without shouting and without hatred. And in that moment it became clear: everything would end very differently than he had planned.
He was arrested in front of the entire crew.

The same people who had stayed silent yesterday were now unable to look away. And everyone understood what this story had become.
The colonel had wanted to get rid of a problem.
But in the end, he became one himself.
