The forester had long been used to silence. After he lost his family and all close people, the forest became his only home, and his job — his only purpose. In the morning he went on patrol, and in the evening he returned to a small house at the edge of the forest, where loneliness waited for him.
He especially often checked the area near the frozen lake. It was a dangerous place — thin ice, hidden cracks. But teenagers still came there to skate, to take risks without thinking about the consequences. He was angry at them, but still kept coming back, as if he felt that one day something bad would happen there.
That day there was a strange silence. Even the wind barely moved. And suddenly — a sound. At first faint, unclear. Not quite a howl, not quite a scream. The forester froze, listened, and his heart suddenly began to beat faster. The sound repeated, clearer this time. Someone was at the lake.
He ran toward the water.
The scene he saw made him stop for a second. In the icy water, a she-wolf was struggling. Large, heavy, with a swollen belly. She was trying to get out, slipping on the ice edge, but each time she fell back into the water. Her movements were sharp, desperate. She was choking, breathing heavily, sometimes letting out that broken cry he had heard.
Wolves are fast and strong creatures. But this was different. Because of pregnancy, she couldn’t jump properly, couldn’t grip the ice. The ice beneath her was cracking, breaking, and with every second she was losing strength. The water around her was already darkened by her fur.
The forester understood he was facing a predator. One wrong move — and it could end badly. But he couldn’t just watch her die.
He carefully approached, lay down on the ice to avoid falling through, and reached out his hands. The she-wolf first jerked back, baring her teeth, but she no longer had the strength for aggression. Then he grabbed her thick wet fur, tensed his whole body, and pulled.
The ice cracked under him, water splashed into his face, his hands went numb from the cold, but he did not let go.
Again and again he pulled her closer until he finally managed to drag her onto solid ice.
The she-wolf collapsed beside him, breathing heavily, unable even to stand. He leaned back, trying to catch his breath, feeling the cold piercing his bones.

But in that same moment, she stood between them.
The same she-wolf he had just pulled from the icy water. She rose, swaying, but there was no longer weakness in her eyes. She bared her teeth and stood in front of him, shielding the man with her body.
The attacking wolf stopped. They stood facing each other. Seconds that felt like eternity.
She growled softly at her pack.
And in that growl was something more than a warning — as if she was telling them this human was not an enemy.
The pack hesitated. The wolves exchanged glances, breathing tensely, but no one moved anymore. Finally, the first attacker slowly stepped back.
The man stood there, unable to believe what was happening.
