During training, the instructor ordered a young girl to crawl a full kilometer through a deep mud pit while the other soldiers moved along the dry course, hoping to humiliate her in front of the entire company—but within minutes, everyone realized they had made a huge mistake.
During preparations for the annual army competition, a young woman named Riley was disliked by many in her unit.
She had transferred to the base only a few months earlier and immediately became the target of mockery. Some soldiers believed she had gotten in through connections. Others were certain she wouldn’t be able to handle the serious physical demands and would eventually ask for a transfer herself.
One instructor in particular took a disliking to her.
The man constantly found reasons to pick on her. If any other soldier made a mistake, the instructor would issue a warning and move on. But if Riley made an error, he would make her perform extra drills in front of the entire company.
Every day, the situation got worse.
During one training session, the unit was preparing for an endurance test. The soldiers had to crawl one kilometer along a special obstacle course. Most participants were to move along a flat dirt track.
But just before the start, the instructor unexpectedly stopped Riley.
He pointed to a long mud pit filled with water and thick sludge.
— You’ll go there, — he said with a smirk.
The soldiers exchanged glances.
The mud trench ran parallel to the main course and was considered much harder. Arms and legs constantly got stuck, and in some places the mud reached almost chest height.
— That’s not fair, — one of the recruits said quietly.
But the instructor only grinned.
— If she thinks she’s a real soldier, she’ll manage.
A few people started laughing.
Riley silently looked at the pit, then at the instructor, and without a single word, lowered herself into the mud. The start signal sounded.
The other soldiers began crawling along the dry track. Riley started moving through the thick sludge.
For the first few minutes, many watched her with mockery. Some were sure she would give up after just a couple of hundred meters. But soon something so unexpected happened that everyone was left in complete shock.
But something strange occurred. While the other participants gradually grew tired, Riley moved faster and faster.
She didn’t waste energy, didn’t fight against the mud, and seemed to know in advance exactly how to distribute her effort.
After a few hundred meters, the smiles began to disappear from the spectators’ faces.
And a little later, it became clear that the girl was overtaking most of the soldiers, despite the far more difficult conditions.
The instructor was no longer smiling.
When Riley crossed the finish line first, silence fell over the training ground. Even the loudest mockers couldn’t understand how this was even possible.
The unit commander, who had been present at the training session, walked up to the girl and unexpectedly asked:

Riley was silent for a few seconds.

— Before the army, I competed in survival races for six years. Most of the courses went through swamps and muddy terrain.

The commander decided to investigate why the instructor had been so determined to humiliate Riley.

A few days later, it came to light that the instructor had been deliberately raising Riley’s standards, putting her in the worst conditions, and regularly violating training regulations.

And a week later, something no one had expected came to light.
The instructor hadn’t been trying to make Riley stronger at all.
He was simply afraid that the girl would take his own son’s spot on the unit’s team for the upcoming army competition.
When this information became known to the unit, many were shocked.
A man who constantly talked about honesty and discipline had for months been using his position for personal gain.
As a result, the instructor was removed from training the team.
And Riley was given the spot on the team.
But just before the departure for the competition, one more event occurred—one that people on the base talked about for a long time afterward.
The commander personally showed Riley the results of the final selection among all military districts.
